Genre: Drama

Language: Finnish
Year: 2021
The Blind Man Who Did Not Want to See Titanic is a depressing movie, sort of, from the happiest country in the world, but in the end, it has a positive message that love overcomes all barriers and feats of human resilience. I felt heartbroken watching the plight of the main protagonist, and it is the beauty of this film that one feels so connected to it.
It is pretty evident from the title it is about a blind man who is also disabled from beneath his chest, and the girl he is in love with is suffering from cancer, and trust me, I got depressed watching so much pain, but thankfully, it has a happy ending.
This film is very innovative as you watch the whole story from the protagonist's perspective, meaning you cannot see a single character in this film until the very end giving you a glimpse inside a blind man's world.
The story is about Jaakko, a blind man, who used to love watching John Carpenter movies, and he hated Titanic so much he never watched it because he is a big fan of James Cameroon movies, the action ones. In the first half, we get an idea about his daily life until one day when his girlfriend gives him some bad news, and he decides to meet her for the first time, who lives in a different town. The second half is about the journey from his home to his girlfriend's. He gets mugged on the way, and how he overcomes the situation - The Blind Man Who Did Not Want to See Titanic is about this journey. And how we should overcome the difficulties in our lives is the message.
There are a lot of movie references, as our main character loves movies, and he doesn't shy away from calling his Uber driver - Travis Bickle. Writer-director Teemu Nikki gets a standing ovation from my side. Petri Poikolainen, a real-life visually impaired lead character, is a source of inspiration.
The Blind Man Who Did Not Want to See Titanic is both depressing and inspirational in many ways, and one of the best films I saw this year.
